The research project “Lux(ury) of Air” invites to look at the sky, a beautiful scenery, where one of our biggest crises is taking place: air pollution. Though often invisible, harmful substances in the air have direct impacts on both health and climate. What exactly makes up our atmosphere? How dependent are we on it? We breathe it, it allows light to reach us… is air a necessity or a luxury?
Particulate matter damages our health, too much CO2 causes climate change, and global dimming -a change in sunlight, impacting this effect possibly even further. Although this air pollution is often invisible, it affects our daily lives.
In the workshop, the invisible atmosphere becomes tangible by measuring light -the most basic element. Looking up, collecting, measuring, gathering data (in Lux) about the sky, whether cloudy or sunny. Light is also captured through Cyanotype prints, where the deeper the blue, the sunnier the day. These prints, alongside the data, are then textile-printed on a scarf, serving as a snapshot of the sky. Speculating, is it a scarf protecting against the cold or the heat of the sun? Who do you give it to? Is it an offer of hope or despair, through imagination -what future do you see?
